Seems Pretty Scentsless...

Fragrance. Parfum. Deodorizer. Freshener. Scent Booster.

These are the most common aliases used by companies to describe synthetic scents on their ingredient label. They are aromatic mixtures (of often unidentified ingredients), combinations of carcinogens [cancer causing], endocrine disruptors [hormonal imbalances tied to weight gain, thyroid dysfunction, and a host of other diseases], neurotoxic chemicals [linked to poor brain function, ADHD, and dysfunctional nervous system], respiratory irritants, and not to mention environmental toxicants. "Fragrance" and "Parfum" is a blanket term that can include over 3,000 different ingredients. And as hard as it is to believe, the FDA does not require companies disclose what chemicals are being used nor do they require companies to warn of potential harm.

These sneaky scents can be found in a number of items we come into contact DAILY. Some of the top perpetrators are personal care products [lotions, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, styling products, and perfume/ cologne], laundry detergent and dryer sheets, air fresheners [wall plug ins, room deodorizer sprays, wax melts, and candles], and household cleaners.

The National Academy of Science endorsed the 2011 study by the Natl. Toxicology Program (comprised of scientists, doctors, and government agencies), and released statements saying there was "compelling evidence" many of the chemical compounds in synthetic fragrances were anticipated human carcinogens. Some of which are KNOWN carcinogens such as styrene (also found in cigarette smoke and car exhaust) and phthalates (read more about these chemicals in one of my previous articles here: https://www.thewellnesswandererblog.com/post/the-ugly-truths-of-the-beauty-industry

On top of all of the major health issues these fake fragrances can cause, they are also listed as one of the top 5 allergens in the world. Reactions can range from migraines and trouble breathing, to pulmonary irritation and neurotoxicity. And if you suffer from asthma, studies have shown worsening of symptoms after being exposed, finding inhalation volume decline (to less than 60%).

But there is good news! You can avoid the dangers of synthetic scents; there are many safe options available and simple steps you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones:

*Buy organic

Certified organic products are less likely to include artificial fragrance (always check labels)

*Essential Oils

Many products are now made with natural essential oils in place of synthetic scents (again, read labels) or you can diffuse your own oil blends in lieu of candles, air fresheners, wax melts, and wall plugs.

*Go green

Houseplants are a great way to naturally deodorize and remove pollutants from the air.

*DIY

Make homemade cleaning products, laundry soap, and personal care products. There are so many simple recipes and instructions available online (I love using Pinterest!)

Oh and skip the dryer sheets! Switch to all natural wool dryer balls, they are humanely made and safe for the environment too.

*When in doubt...

Buy unscented versions of your favorite products.

*Ultimately

The more you can live fragrance free, the safer you and your family are from these harmful toxic chemicals. Science has proven the more synthetic scents you eliminate, the more you can decrease the probability of a plethora of serious, chronic health problems.

**I will be sharing more on toxicity in articles to come with intent to inform and empower you, and aid in creating the healthiest {and happiest!} life possible.
