Coffee is one of the most consumed products on Earth, over two billion cups a day on average...holy joe (pun intended)! Yet this beautiful beverage has brought some controversy and misinformation. Did you know there has been over 19,000 scientific studies conducted on coffee and its effects on our health? Lucky for you, I dove in to extract the most crucial information for all of my bean enthusiasts.
Research began in the 1950's, with the outcome declaring coffees negative impact on our health, even linking its consumption to several diseases and disorders. Only to find out later that most studies were flawed, neglecting the consideration of smoking, lack of physical activity, and alcohol use. Some of this misinformation has skewed our view of coffee, but I am here to set the record straight. Here's what you need to know:
Free Radical Fighters
Coffee is one of the richest sources of anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants are substances that help prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals (compounds in the body linked to diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other illness). A diet rich in anti-oxidants, including coffee, can reduce the damaging effects of free radicals and in turn lower your risk for certain diseases. In fact, the numbers are staggering when it comes to coffee consumption and disease prevention. A few findings showed a 20% decreased risk of stroke, 30% decreased risk of Parkinson's and heart disease, and 40%+ decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, certain forms of cancer and Alzheimer's.
Performance Enhancing
Coffee has a one-two punch when it comes to daily performance. The added bonus of natural caffeine has helped many boost their metabolic rate, sometimes more than 10%, which is directly correlated with weight loss/ management. Not only can it greatly improve exercise performance, research now shows coffee can benefit brain function. Daily consumption boosts mood, improves memory, increases energy levels, and decreases the risk of depression.
"But what about..."
There are a few negative effects of coffee, however they may not be what you think.
Coffee is often associated with "jitters" due to caffeination, some even claim caffeine intolerance. However, mold toxins (better known as mycotoxins) are typically the underlying issue and commonly contaminate the green coffee bean during the growing process. These mycotoxins can be correlated with other health issues such as hypertension, kidney disease, and brain damage. Studies have shown over 52% of green coffee beans are contaminated with a mold known as Ochratoxin (OTA) which can wreak havoc on your immune and nervous systems. Almost 50% of brewed coffees are also found to be moldy....making coffee the largest source of mycotoxins in the food supply.
Another rampant issue in the coffee bean growing process is the use of pesticides. 97% of the world's coffee crops are chemically treated during cultivation. Some companies state that the roasting process destroys pesticides, but since the chemicals penetrate the green coffee bean, they are by no means eradicated. As little as 3% of coffee growers world wide are certified organic, using no chemical pesticides on their crop.
Acidity in coffee can also negatively effect certain people that suffer from digestive issues such as stomach ulcers, irritable bowl syndrome, or Chron's disease.
