3 Ways to reduce inflammation today!

Chronic diseases and pain are among the leading causes of disability, loss of ability to remain physically active, and loss of income.

Studies are now showing us that many chronic diseases, such as joint pain, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, neuropathy, cardiovascular diseases, depression and accelerated aging are due to chronic inflammation.

Unfortunately, repeated use of NSAIDs might lead to side effects such as heartburn, stomach pain, ulcers, and/or bleeding, and may increase the risk of damage to the liver or kidneys, and heart attack or stroke.

To support healthier function and reduction in inflammation, here are 3 simple lifestyle or nutritional tips you can use starting today!

#1: Turmeric – The well-known spice turmeric contains a naturally occurring chemical called Curcumin. Curcumin was found to have anti-inflammatory properties by decreasing the proinflammatory phospholipase A2 (as well as others). It has an anti-catabolic (reduce the breakdown of muscle mass) which could be useful in inflammatory and degenerative conditions. REMINDER: curcumin is not bioavailable on its own (the body can't readily absorb it) so be sure to pair it with a bit of black pepper; the compound piperine in pepper enhances curcumin absorption by 2,000% !

#2: Tai ChiInitially practiced by Chinese martial artists, Tai Chi is an ancient form of physical activity intended to support good health. Tai Chi movements are slow, do not require specific skill, strength, or level of fitness, and can be practiced in sitting or standing positions. You can easily find free classes on Youtube.

Studies show that practicing Tai Chi is a safe and effective way of relieving pain, improving the sensation of well-being, and improving physical function in people with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

#3: Reduction in sugar and Removal of fast food – In a nutritional survey [Arthritis care & Research 2020] among 217 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, nearly 75 percent of patients reported that dietary changes had a positive effect on their symptoms. The foods that reported to reduce the most symptoms were blueberries and spinach, while the foods that worsened the symptoms the most were soda drinks with sugar and desserts.

While changing your diet is not an easy thing to do, the first step is to bring awareness to the effect of your lifestyle and diet on your condition and chronic pain. Hiring a coach or other wellness practitioner to help you cultivate necessary positive changes is the best way to start. You'll feel empowered through education and find extra motivation and accountability when working closely with them.
